Church and ministry leadership resources to better equip, train and provide ideas for today’s church and ministry leaders, like you. For those who have yet to get it can you describe the process. When one of my editors heard about this, she suggested that it might make a good book and that I should also keep that in the back of my mind. In the end, it turned out that the format and style did lend itself well to a book, something very close to a short Lenten retreat or series of reflections that others might appreciate. What makes Franciscan though on these two topics different than others? I really believe that Francis of Assisi, who remains the most famous saint in Christian history after Mary the mother of God, of course , offers all women and men a model of Christian living. He knew intuitively what it was to love fully and suffer, as well as the centrality of these themes in the Christian tradition.

While the concept of having a relationship with God in human terms is not new, Br. Daniel Horan, OFM, has put a modern-day metaphorical spin on a time-honored theme. Saints and religious leaders throughout the ages have referred to God as a lover, friend and companion, said Br. Dan, who recently took solemn vows in Holy Name Province. For example, St.
Francis, looks at how a relationship with God is similar to a relationship with a lover, friend, or family member. Dan wrote the book to encourage people to pursue fulfilling relationships with God, and to realize that, like any relationship, getting closer to God will have its ups and downs. God can be right there when things are going wonderfully and, at other times, when things are going badly, or if a relationship is poor, God can seem far away.
He uses the example of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who said she felt that God was absent from her life for something like 30 years.

An Engaging Faith: Fr. Dan Horan
It may seem shocking to compare our relationship with God with the notion of “dating. With fresh insight and a deep personal spirituality, Horan points out that the desire, uncertainty, and love we experience in relationship with God resembles our earthly relationships: We set aside time for the people who are most important to us. Horan reminds us that St. Francis of Assisi understood and even described his relationship with God in a similar way.

Posted by Daniel P. My feet are planted quite firmly in two worlds. One foot stands in a globalized, technological, and fast-paced world. Born in the early s, I am rather expectantly a child of my generation and comfortable in a digital world. The other foot, clad in the iconic sandal, rests in the displaced dirt that marks the footprint of Francis of Assisi. Having completed my undergraduate education at a Franciscan university, I responded to what I felt deep within was an invitation to walk on a particular journey in this life.
I entered the Order of Friars Minor and, for several years, remained the youngest Franciscan friar in my province, the largest group of Franciscan friars in North America. I am a Millennial Franciscan.

This morning I read a very intriguing blog post written by my colleague and a friend of many here at Daily Theology, Dan Horan, O. Barash is no stranger to selling books on related topics. One should note from the titles that Barash is no Richard Dawkins. It may not be surprising, then, that I had mixed feelings about the idea of spending 10 days in solitude secluded from the modern world in a hermitage. I am a Franciscan novice. Both of those words are open to misinterpretation, so let me clarify. I am a Franciscan friar, a member of the religious order of men founded by St. Francis of Assisi. As such I live following the Rule of St. Francis , which outlines a way of life modeled after the Gospel. A friar is neither a monk nor a secular cleric, but a man who lives in a community of brothers who profess to live with nothing of their own poverty , without marrying chastity and under the direction of their superiors obedience.
While this outline does little justice to the complexities of Franciscan life, it is at least a foundation. Novices, quite literally, are beginners. In our way of life a novice is one in his second year of what totals five to seven years of formation, or training. I mention my relative youth because it directly affects my hermitage experience and future experiences of solitude.
